Fall In Love with Fall
Summer may be over, but those cloudy skies come with a silver lining. Here are 10 reasons to fall in love with fall.
Turn over a new leaf
Remember how you wanted so bad to keep your brand-new school books in pristine condition? We all start out with the best of intentions. How about this time around we give ourselves permission to just do our best? A scribble here or there won’t be the end of the world. Dial back on the impossible standards, stop putting yourself under ridiculous pressure, and just settle for presentable pages that are vaguely legible…
Home sweet home
On sunny summer days, there’s no excuse needed to head out to a rooftop or sidewalk cafe to soak up some rays. Once the dull weather sets in, it’s nice to stay home for a change, light a comforting leather-scented candle, and hang out with friends or snuggle up under a cozy blanket for a movie night.
Did you say snuggle?
Drag your comforter out to the couch or bundle up in a cashmere stole: all we want at this time of year is to snuggle into the warm, cozy fabrics we’d forgotten about in the lazy hazy days of summer. It’s not quite cold enough for a fur coat, but on chilly fall nights we love to nuzzle into a cashmere or modal stole, run our fingers across the velvet of a crossbody bag or delight in the animal warmth of leopard print.
New season, new purse
Relive the childlike excitement of a new schoolbag when you take out your brand-new fall purse for the very first time. Tip the few remaining grains of sand out of the trusty bag you dragged around all summer and stash it away for some well-earned R ‘n’ R. It’s time to grab a curry-colored ray of sunshine, a splash of ocean-fresh blue, or a ruby-red sunset to dangle from your arm.
Black is back
Like pumpkin spice – temporarily abandoned for sunnier scents – black has been biding its time before giving a somber salute to summer. Timeless elegance makes a comeback with tops, jackets and pants in deep dark tones. By the way, now is your chance to flatter your still-bronzed complexion with a head-to-toe black ensemble.
Crisp new reads
Chick lit and sunscreen-smeared summer reads are awesome for the beach. But once the evenings start closing in, we can’t wait to get our teeth into a decent novel, and a crop of new releases in the fall is always something to look forward to. We’re excited to curl up with this year’s Pulitzer Prize winner, The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen. And there’s no better time to read The Ancient Minstrel by Jim Harrison, author of Legends of the Fall, who sadly died this past spring.
Open a wardrobe of possibility
Let’s face it: there’s not much to summer dressing. Our warm weather wardrobe is as simple as you can get. As the temperature plummets we rediscover the joy of layering and relish the chance to change up our look. Fall dawns with endless wardrobe possibilities. The jacket is back with a bang, draped over a somber-toned top, while snug stoles keep us warm over a sleeveless mini dress.
Lift style-conscious spirits
We haven’t seen the end of ballerina flats, sneakers and moccasins, but our feet are crying out for those heels we had no room for in our beach bags. Ease the transition into this season’s lofty heights with a square heel or an inner sole just short of an inch thick. And after your refresher in high heels, you’ll be able to power dress as gracefully as ever in these teetering low boots.
